We are the Signatories of the International Science-Based Targets Initiative (SBTi)

Aydem Yenilenebilir Enerji has signed the international Science Based Targets Initiative, which supports the efforts of institutions to reduce total greenhouse gas emissions within the scope of the fight against climate change.  Our company has been one of the pioneering companies in the energy sector to sign the initiative.

In line with the Science-Based Targets initiative (SBTi), our company has committed to set a science-based long-term goal to achieve net zero value chain greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 at the latest, in line with the Net-Zero Standard, submit it for SBTi verification and publish it within a maximum of 24 months.

Aydem Yenilenebilir Enerji General Manager Ömer Fatih Keha (on the left) and Aydem Enerji HSE and Sustainability Group Director Cem Çelebi (on the right) signed SBTi on 1 November 2022.

Our General Manager Ömer Fatih Keha, who states that our company, which is also a participant of the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC), carries out its activities on the axis of sustainability, said: "In 2018, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change pointed out that global warming should not exceed 1.5°C to avoid the devastating effects of climate change. Greenhouse gas emissions need to halve by 2030 and fall to net zero by 2050 in order to achieve this. Organizations with science-based targets are already reducing their emissions on a scale. We signed the Science-Based Targets Initiative, which we believe will be a roadmap for our company to effectively reduce our greenhouse gas emissions by setting science-based targets and reach net zero. Through this initiative, which offers a range of target-setting resources and guidance, we have made a company-wide commitment to achieve near-term emission reductions and net zero targets in line with climate science by effectively applying international management standards across all our business processes.  We are glad that our commitment was approved on 17 November and announced on the official page of SBTi. We will always continue to reflect our identity as a leading company in the fight against climate change. Because with our renewable energy production, we act with the responsibility of preparing a better future for the environment, society and the next generations. "

Cem Çelebi, Aydem Energy HSE and Sustainability Group Director, who points out that the goal of halving greenhouse gas emissions worldwide by 2030 and zeroing them in 2050 can be achieved with science-based targets, said, "Companies that set science-based emission reduction targets are preparing their businesses for the future from today while reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The Company which commits to setting a net zero target with this awareness, has agreed to be a part of the 'The Business Ambition for 1.5°C' campaign, led by the Science Based Targets Initiative and in partnership with the UN Global Compact and the We Mean Business Coalition. With this commitment, we announced that we will also participate in the ’Race to Zero‘campaign launched by COP26 Climate Action Leaders and aimed at forming the largest coalition in line with the net zero carbon target by 2050. ”

What is Science-Based Targets Initiative (SBTi)?

The Science Based Targets Initiative is a global organization that enables companies to set ambitious emission reduction targets in line with the latest climate science. Science-based targets refer to targets to reduce greenhouse gas emissions consistent with the level of decarbonization required, according to climate science, to keep the global temperature rise to no more than 1.5°C above pre-industrial temperature levels. It helps companies determine at what rate and at what rate they should reduce their emissions.

What is Net Zero?

SBTi is also referred to as the Corporate Net Zero Standard. It provides guidance, criteria and advice to support companies in setting clear zero targets through SBTi. The main objective of this standard is to provide a standard and robust approach for companies to set clear zero targets that are aligned with climate science.
